Global Smartphone Shipments Jump 43 Percent in Q2 2010

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew a relatively healthy 43 percent year-over-year to reach 60 million units in Q2 2010. Healthy operator subsidies, vigorous competition between premium-tier vendors and a growing range of lower-cost models continued to drive the upswing.

Android’s Enterprise Features Put it on Par with IPhone, Not BlackBerry

The official launch this week of the Android 2.2 (a.k.a., “Froyo”) platform has been Google’s most significant step toward making Android enterprise-friendly.
The big news here is that Google has added several features that will give IT departments much more control over Android-based devices than they have in the past.
This is all obviously welcome news for enterprise users who want to bring their Android devices to work with them.
However, they shouldn’t expect to have full access to all corporate applications, as Google’s open source mobile platform will likely never match up with the security prowess of Research in Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry devices.

Mobile Payment Transactions to Double in Value to $200bn by 2012

A new study by Juniper Research forecasts that the value of digital and physical goods that people buy with their mobiles will reach $200bn globally by 2012, compared to just less than $100bn this year. Digital goods include entertainment and tickets, whilst physical goods include groceries, gifts and books.

Gartner Says Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Grew 17 Per Cent in First Quarter 2010

Worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the first quarter of 2010, a 17 per cent increase from the same period in 2009, according to Gartner, Inc. Smarpthone sales to end users reached 54.3 million units, an increase of 48.7 per cent from the first quarter of 2009.
RIM is making its debut into the top five worldwide mobile handset manufacturers ranking.

SAP Co-CEOs: Mobile Is The New Desktop

Mobile is the new desktop” — that’s the proclamation from SAP co-CEOs Bill McDermott and Jim Hagemann Snabe on May 17 during the opening day of the company’s SAPphire customer conference, being held simultaneously in Orlando, FL and Frankfurt Germany.
“Customers today have to run real-time businesses,” said McDermott. “The pace of competition, the global consolidation in many industries that we see is forcing people to compete in real time, and locking the company’s mission in unison has to happen in real time. To do that, you have to connect workers on the fly. Most workers are mobile and have to make decisions in real time that connect the boardroom to the shop floor.”
He added: “This movement toward mobility is an unstoppable force.”
